Another comeback nets a women’s soccer win

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Golden Eagles spent Friday night putting together an impressive 3-2 comeback win over the Mississippi University for Women in both teams' 2023 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) debut.

Spalding sits at 2-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SLIAC with the win while the Owls dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

TURNING POINT

The Mississippi University for Women only took two shots in the first half and both of them ended up in the net. Despite being down 2-0 after 45 minutes, Spalding led the opening frame in shots 13-2, shots on goal 6-2, and corner kicks 4-1.

In the 56th minute, SU took the first chunk out of the lead. A corner kick from Faith Rutherford to the left of the goal curved perfectly into the goal. It was the third of the season for the forward.

Around six minutes later, Rutherford struck again for the Golden Eagles. A yellow card set up a Spalding penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Rutherford put the ball in the top left corner of the goal to tie the match at 2-2.

The first goal of Taylor Zebarth's career came at a perfect time. In the 70th minute, the sophomore threw the ball in play and immediately had it passed back to her. A long kick found home in the net and ended up being the game-winning goal.

The Golden Eagles picked up a 3-2 win in the season's SLIAC premiere match.
