LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In a Louisville versus Lexington battle, the Spalding baseball team came out on top of Transylvania University 6-0.
After defeating the Pioneers, Spalding moved to 5-1 overall which is the best beginning of a season for SU since 2019.
TURNING POINT
There is a reason why all things went the way that they did for SU on Tuesday night: an impressive performance on the mound and solid hitting.
Michael Newsom led off for the Golden Eagles and doubled down the right-field line to get the hitting started. Back-to-back sacrifice fly balls, one from
Matthew McDowell and the other courtesy of
Hunter Strong, sent Newsom home with the first run of the game.
Spalding's next three runs came home thanks to some Transy mistakes. In the bottom of the fourth, with two outs and
Ethan Tuttle on base from an earlier double, a wild pitch sent Tuttle home. In the bottom of the next two frames, throwing errors sent two more Golden Eagles home.Â
The fifth run was scored by Newsom thanks to a
Dryden Schroeder single to right center. It felt like deja vu for the final run of the game as it was a wild pitch from the Pioneers pitcher that scored McDowell.
Tuesday marked the second 6-0 shutout of the early season as Spalding blanked Wilmington with the same score in the season-opening game.
GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
- Dryden Schroeder was 4-for-5 with a game-leading four hits. Both Michael Newsom and Ethan Tuttle notched two hits and scored two runs.
- All three of the above SU batters notched doubles, with Tuttle earning two.
- Garrett Mathews earned his second win of the season on the mound. He pitched a complete nine innings and struck out 10. The right-hander allowed no runs and just two hits.
- The complete-game shutout was the first of the senior pitcher's career.
- The bat on the Transylvania logo ended up being the only prominent bat of any kind for the visiting Pioneers. Transy was only able to put together two hits in the contest.
- The D3 Baseball//NCBWA top 25 poll again allowed the Golden Eagles to enter freely and of their own free will into a receiving votes slot.
NEXT FOR SPALDING
