MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Spalding's softball team started off the season with a sweep against Wilson College and Worcester State.
After the first day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, the Golden Eagles sat at a 2-0 record to start the season.
GAME ONE - SPALDING 4, WILSON 0
In game one of the day it started off to a slow start on both sides. Starting at the top of the 4th,
Madison Loechle hit a lead off single before stealing second to put herself in scoring position. The junior then scored the first run of the season for the Golden Eagles on an error by Wilson's pitcher.
Kaleigh Franklin-Brooks scored a run after a Spalding ground out.
During the fifth inning, catcher
Rylee Phillips, after hitting a leadoff single, scored on a
Jessica Tucker sacrifice fly.
Grayce Marcum also scored in the frame on a
Bella Velez RBI single bringing the score to 4-0 to confirm the win for Spalding.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 7, WORCESTER ST. 4
The action in the second game of the day started immediately in the first inning with the duo of
Jessica Tucker and
Dawn Wilson. Tucker hit a double that sent Wilson home to score for the first time in the game.
The action continued during the top of the second. Wilson sent two of her teammates home,
Kailey Reed and
Jenni Beasley, with a double of her own. Wilson was brought home after a single by Marcum, bringing the score to 4-2.
During the top of the sixth, Reed, after walking to get on base, rounded home for the second time in the game with help from a single from Tucker. While
Bella Velez was at bat Tucker stole a base putting runners on second and third. A two RBI single hit from Velez sent both Franklin-Brooks and Tucker home which brought the score to 7-4 to end the game.
GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
- In the first game, Madison Loechle was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, Three Golden Eagles had one RBI in the game: Jessica Tucker, Bella Velez, and Bianca Ward.
- In the second game, both Bella Velez and Jessica Tucker were 2-for-4 at the plate. Tucker and Velez had 2 RBI as well as Dawn Wilson.
- Bella Velez was the winning pitcher in game one, pitching seven full innings and allowing just one hit and no runs. She struck out six batters.
- Erica McMann was the starting pitcher in game two, she pitched four full innings allowing 10 hits and three earned runs. Michalea Ferman, who came in to pitch three innings in relief, was the winning pitcher. She allowed no hits and no runs while striking out three.
- Spalding was responsible for five stolen bases in the final game of the day. Grayce Marcum, Jessica Tucker, Bella Velez, Rylee Phillips, and Karlee Terral each robbed a base.
