MYRTLE BEACH S.C. - Spalding's softball team continued their winning streak with a win on the second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic against Scranton, and on the third day with victories over Skidmore and Mount Aloysius.
After the second and third day of play, with one game played and a rain cancelation, the Golden Eagles improved their record to 5-0. It is the best start for Spalding since 2019.
GAME ONE - SPALDING 7 - SCRANTON 1
In the first game of the second day of the classic, Scranton scored first in the top of the first. But during the bottom of the first, senior
Kailey Reed, after making it to third through pitching and fielding errors, with an RBI single by
Bella Velez through the left side. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the frame.
The Golden Eagles kept up their pressure during the next inning. After hitting a single through the right side,
Kaleigh Franklin-Brooks was brought home by a RBI double by
Allison Nell. She was brought home during the next at bat by a single down the left center by
Bianca Ward. After a wild pitch and a fly out to right field by
Brooklynn Nolot, Ward was sent home by a RBI by
Rylee Phillips, which brought the score up to 4-1 to end the inning.
During the sixth inning, the game was solidified for Spalding.
Jenni Beasley hit a single down the right side to start the frame followed by the senior stealing second and then reaching third on a wild pitch. A two RBI Reed single up the middle scored Terral and Beasley. During a ground out for Velez, Reed was able to advance to home. The run brought the score to 7-1 and the win.
GAME TWO - SPALDING 3, SKIDMORE 1
The offensive action for this game started during the bottom of the second. Franklin-Brooks got on the bases from a single through the left side and a steal advancing her to second. She was brought in by an RBI double down the line from
Dawn Wilson. After the RBI Wilson advanced to third on a passed ball. She was brought home from an RBI single down the middle from Terral.
An RBI single for Skidmore cut the lead to just one in the fourth frame.
During the bottom of the sixth Reed was pinch running for Velez after she got a single down through the left side. After a feilding error by Skidmore's right fielder, Reed rounded the bases and advanced to home for the final run for the game bringing the score to 3-1.
GAME THREE - SPALDING 6, MOUNT ALOYSIUS 2
The top of the first saw the first score of the game. After a Wilson walk subsequent stealing of second and third, she was in scoring position early. Wilson was brought home by a RBI from
Jessica Tucker after Tucker reached first by an error by Mount Aloysius's short stop.
The Mounties immediately responded with a run of their own to tie the game 1-1 at the bottom of the first.
During the top of the third, Tucker got back on the bases from a double. She was brought home by a RBI double from
Madison Loechle to regain the lead, 2-1. Mount Aloysius responded well again under pressure bringing the game back to a draw 2-2 at the bottom of the third thanks to an RBI single.
At the top of the sixth, the Golden Eagles started to pull away from the Mounties. Franklin-Brooks earned herself a double to get on base in a scoring position. She was brought in by a RBI single from
Hayleigh Gnagie.
During the top of the seventh, three runs where scorded by Spalding to secure the win. Tucker was the first to score in the inning after a she got on the bases by an error by the left fielder. She was brought home by a RBI double from Velez. Reed pinch ran for Velez and scored on an RBI single by Loechle. An RBI double by Franklin-Brooks scored Loechle to make the final score 6-2.
GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
- In the first game, both Kaleigh Franklin-Brooks and Allison Nell were 2-for-3 at the plate.Kailey Reed and Bella Velez led SU with two RBI each.
- In the second game, Dawn Wilson was 2-for-2 at the plate. Both Wilson and Karlee Terral had a team-leading one RBI for the game.
- In the third game, Madison Loechle was 2-for-3 at the plate. She also had 2 RBI in the game, which led all players.
- Michaela Ferman was the winning pitcher for the Golden Eagles in the first game. She allowed 4 hits and no earned runs during her seven innings in the circle. The freshman struck out nine batters.
- Erica McMann was the winning pitcher for the second game pitching all seven innings. In the circle, she allowed four hits and one earned run.
- In the third game, Bella Velez was the winning pitcher and pitched the full seven innings. She allowed seven hits and just one earned run in the circle, while striking out five.
