Baseball sweeps Greenville series

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team swept the Greenville Panthers outscoring them 44-10 on the weekend. The Golden Eagles remain the #2 seed in the SLIAC as their record improves to 20-13 overall and 12-3 in SLIAC play.
 
Game 1: Spalding 15 Greenville 5
The Golden Eagles would score their first seven runs of the game in first three inning. Michael Newsom would single to center field to start the game. Newsom would steal second and third base for Spalding as Dryden Schroeder would score him on a single to left field. Two leadoff walks in the top of the third would end in Spalding adding six more runs on to their lead. Michael Speck would score Jacob Spanyer and Schroeder, who walked earlier in the inning, on an outfield single. Marcus Collins would double to left field to score Bronner on the drive. With a 7-1 advantage, Jacob Spanyer would blast a ball over the left center field fence for a solo shot and an added run. The Golden Eagles would continue to tack on the runs as they take the first win of the series, 15-5.
 
Adam Weining gets his first win of the season for a record of 1-0. Marcus Collins goes 3-for-5 with three runs scored, four RBIs, a double, and a homerun while Jacob Spanyer goes 1-for-3 with three runs scored, one RBI, three walks, and a homerun. Hunter Strong goes 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a walk, and a double.
 
Game 2: Spalding 14 Greenville 1
Back-to-back homeruns by Dryden Schroeder and Jacob Spanyer would give Spalding the early two-run lead. Sam Pinho would hit the third homerun of the game to add to the Golden Eagle lead. Spanyer would also homer in the top of the third inning for his second homerun of the game giving Spalding the 5-0 lead. The Golden Eagles keep the offense running as they combine for 14 runs on 17 hits and one error to take the game, 14-1
 
Wesley Clark gets the win on the bump for Spalding to extend his record 3-0. Michael Newsom, Dryden Schroeder, and Jacob Spanyer all record three hits in a combined 13 at-bats for a total of eight run scored, seven RBIs, and three homeruns. Sam Pinho goes 3-for-4 with a homerun, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
 
Game 3: Spalding 15 Greenville 4
Spalding would score their first two runs in the top of the second inning as Marcus Collins scores Eric Bronner on his single to center field. Jahlyn Mckie would hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Michael Speck who singled earlier in the inning. As Clay Burton keeps the Panthers scoreless, the SU offense would add two more runs in the top of the third inning as the Golden Eagles would string some hits together. Despite being up 5-0, the Golden Eagle defense would begin to crack as Greenville scores four in the bottom of the fifth inning. With just a one-run lead, SU would explode in the sixth for a 10-run inning to take the lead and eventually the win 15-4.
 
Garrett Mathews gets the win for SU on the mound for an overall record of 4-2. Spanyer would go 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk. Bronner, Speck, Collins, and Strong combine for nine hits in 14 at-bats with a combined 10 RBIs, eight runs scored, a homerun, and two doubles.
 
Up next, the Golden Eagles will take on the visiting Asbury Eagles for a midweek game this Wednesday, April 27th at home with first pitch at 5 pm ET.
