LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team takes two of the three game series to Westminster. The Golden Eagles extend their record to 14-12 overall and 6-3 in SLIAC play.
Game 1: Spalding 13 Westminster 3
The Blue Jays would strike first in the top of the second inning as they push one run across on a double to right center. Spalding would answer back with a six-run second inning to have a five-run lead.
Eric Bronner would get the rally going with an infield single and then stole second base on the next pitch.
Michael Speck would advance Bronner to third as he grounds out to the right side of the field. Bronner would then score on
Hunter Strong's hit to the shortstop who overthrew the first baseman, sending Stong to second.
Marcus Collins would score Strong as hit singles through the right side of the field, giving Spalding the 2-1 lead. The rally would continue as
Ethan Tuttle,
Michael Newsom,
Dryden Schroeder, and
Jacob Spanyer each record hits in the big inning. The Golden Eagles would score seven more over the course of four innings as they take advantage of Blue Jay errors and wild pitches. Matthew Mcdowell would pinch hit for
Everette Cogan in the 6
th and blast a homerun over the right-center field fence to end the game in seven innings.
Michael Newsom goes 2-for-5 with a run, a double, and three RBIs as
Dryden Schroeder goes 1-for-2 with three walks, a run, and a stolen base.
Hunter Strong went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs, and a double while
Marcus Collins went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, and a double.
Peyton Hood earns his fifth win of the season on the bump for SU.
Game 2: Spalding 6 Westminster 5
In game two of the series, the Blue Jays would score first in the second inning. Westminster would add another run to give them the 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning. The Golden Eagles would cut the lead in half in the third as
Marcus Collins reaches on a fielding error then advances two extra bases on back-to-back passed balls. Collins would then score on another fielding error to give Spalding their first run. Both teams would stay quiet offensively until the seventh inning as Westminster adds three more runs to their lead. The Golden Eagles would answer back in the bottom of the eighth as SU would string some hits together to push two runs across. With the ninth inning coming up fast, the Golden Eagles have just three outs to work with. Mcdowell would start the final inning off with a single to right field.
Marcus Collins would homer over the left field fence to tie the score at five.
Sam Pinho would single to left field to keep the offense going.
Michael Newsom would get hit by pitch to earn a free base and advance Pinho to second.
Dryden Schroeder would walk it off for the Golden Eagles as he singles up the middle to score Pinho giving them the win 6-5.
Aaron Blake gets his first win on the mound for SU this season.
Marcus Collins went 2-for-4 with two runs, a homerun, and two RBIs as
Sam Pinho goes 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk.
Game 3: Westminster 4 Spalding 3
Michael Newsom would lead off the Golden Eagle offense with a triple to left center field. Newsom would then score on
Dryden Schroeder's groundout to shortstop giving Spalding the 1-0 lead. The Blue Jays would answer back in the fourth inning as they push three runs across to take the 3-1 lead. Spalding would eventually tie the score at three as they score two in the bottom of the seventh. A walk and a hit by pitch would load the bases and walk in two runs for Spalding to tie the score. The Blue Jays would earn another run in the top of the ninth to secure the win, 4-3.
Nate Thomas would earn his second loss of the season on the mound for SU.
Michael Newsom would go 1-for-3 with a run, a triple, and two walks as
Eric Bronner goes 2-for-4 with an RBI, a double, and a walk.
