Volleyball Bests Beavers

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – Spalding volleyball got things going back in the right direction with a 3-1 win over Blackburn on Friday night.

The Golden Eagles moved to 5-12 overall and 4-3 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play after the 25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 25-22 showing. The Beavers fell to 3-12 on the year with a 2-5 SLIAC mark.

TURNING POINT

Spalding notched the first point of the day in a close opening set with a Jayda Branch kill. Seven ties were dotted throughout the frame as the teams felt each other out. The final tie was broken by a Abigail Ratts and Kayla Dunican block. A 7-2 Golden Eagle run gave the eagles the 25-20 set win.

Set two was never really in doubt for the visiting team. Spalding went on a 7-2 run to start the frame bolstered by several BC errors and kills from Branch and Ella Clark. The dominance continued the rest of the set as the Golden Eagles took the frame 25-13.

Blackburn took control early in the do-or-die set for the Beavers. A 4-0 run put them up 12-5 and had SU against the wall. The Golden Eagles used an 8-2 run to pull within one. Two Dunican kills and a handful of BC errors led to the streak. Spalding kept the momentum going and a Clark service ace gave SU a 20-19 lead. Ultimately the lead did not hold and Blackburn won the frame 25-21.

The back-and-forth nature of the match continued into the fourth set. The Golden Eagles took an early 7-2 lead which held until an 8-0 run pushed the Beavers to the top 15-14. Five ties came after that point as the teams battled at Blackburn. A block by Kendall Mattison and Dunican followed by a kill from Mattison took the set and match win for Spalding.
