EUREKA, Ill. – Another win came for the Golden Eagles in the form of a 3-2 win against Eureka on Saturday.
The 25-23, 17-25, 25-16, 25-27, 15-6 Spalding win moved the team to 6-12 overall and 5-3 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) action. The Red Devils dropped to 5-11 and 1-6 in conference play.
TURNING POINT
A close first set was a tone-setter for the match. A 10-2 run appeared to have SU in charge, but Eureka tied it at 20-all. Kills from Jayda Branch, Abigail Ratts, and Ella Clark stemmed the Red Devil charge and pushed the Golden Eagles to the 25-23 win.
Set two saw Eureka jump out to a 12-6 lead, using a 10-0 run, that Spalding struggled to overcome. The visitors stayed in the match but fell 25-17.
The third set felt like the inverse of the prior frame. The Golden Eagles charged to a 9-3 lead and held the Red Devils at bay the entire way. Four service aces helped propel Spalding to the 25-16 set win, with Clark notching two and Gabby Ellis and Brianna Terpening each providing one.
Fans in Illinois got some free volleyball as the teams had to go past the 25th point to find a winner in the fourth set. Both teams battled for control to the tune of 13 ties. The Golden Eagles built a four-point lead at 14-10, but it did not hold. Two late errors and a Eureka kill gave them the 27-25 set win.
Spalding came out red hot in the final set with a 7-1 run to open the action. The lead was never in doubt the whole way for SU as they hit a blazing .563 in the fifth frame. A KJ Baker kill finished the match with a 15-6 set win.
GOLDEN EAGLE NOTES
- Spalding had a block party and notched nine of the defensive stops.
- Three Golden Eagles had double-digit kills. Abigail Ratts (13), Jayda Branch (12), and Jordyn Sarver (10) led the way.
- Branch notched a double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs.
- Ratts led the team in hitting percentage with .440. It was her second-best showing of the season.
