HANOVER, Ind. – The Spalding men's soccer team dropped their season opener on the road at Hanover, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon.
The game was scoreless after the 40 minutes, but the Panthers got on the scoreboard on a Carlos Schryver goal in the 42
nd minute. The Panthers added to their lead in the 65
th when Schryver found Luke Eppler for a goal.
Ahmadou Gueye got the Golden Eagles within one when he fired a penalty kick into the back of the net past Hanover keeper Luciano Salemi to make the score 2-1 with just under 15 minutes to play. Spalding had opportunities to tie the game in the final five minutes, but Salemi was there to save shots by
Adrian Oyler and
Luc Cesar.
Trevor Massa (0-1) took the loss in-goal. Massa finished the match with eight saves while relinquishing two goals.
Up next, the Golden Eagles host Berea, Centre and Adrian for the JR Hoe Invitational September 3-5. The Golden Eagles face Berea in the opener Friday at 7:30 pm ET and cap off the weekend against Centre Sunday at 7:30 pm ET.
