LOUISVILLE Ky. – The Spalding University volleyball team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to take on Webster and Fontbonne, before heading to Carlinville, Illinois to face Blackburn. After a rough beginning and two straight losses, the Golden Eagles were able to turn their weekend around with a win on Sunday against the Beaver, making their weekend record 1-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Spalding came out strong in the first set against Webster, securing the set win 25-15. After the first set, a shift in momentum led to three straight Webster set wins, 22-25, 21-25, 13-25. The Golden Eagles managed to keep the scores in the second and third set close, but overall were defeated by the Gorloks. The Spalding attack was led by
Cassie Jones with 12 kills and
Maggie Purichia with 11.
Mya Summers picked up 31 assists and 14 digs for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles faced a harsh loss to the Griffins in three straight sets, losing 14-25, 18-25, 17-25. Fontbonne was able to get ahead early in each set and the Golden Eagles did not have enough time to recover.
Cassie Jones once again led the Spalding offense with 7 kills, while adding 3.0 blocks. With the absence of
Mya Summers, the Golden Eagles' setter,
Sarah Richards and
Gabby Ellis worked to fill the spot. Richards picked up 11 assists and Ellis added 6.
The Golden Eagles moved on to Illinois in the hopes to defeat Blackburn and end their weekend on a positive note. They did exactly that, securing a win after a hard fought five set match, 20-25, 15-25, 25-11, 25-21, 15-8. Spalding lost two early sets, but with their backs against the wall they won the last three sets to take the match, 3-2.
Maggie Purichia led the Spalding attack with 17 kills.
Gabby Ellis recorded 4 service aces, while
Sarah Richards and Samantha Robinson added 2 apiece.
Cassie Jones stepped up, defending the Beavers' attack with 4 blocks.
Mya Summers recorded 46 assists and
Gabby Ellis led the back row with 24 digs.
