Louisville Ky. – The Spalding women's basketball team fell to SLIAC foe Greenville, 65-60, Saturday afternoon in their season opener. The game marked head coach
Kylee Gorby's inaugural game at the helm of the Golden Eagle program.
Hunter Wright and
Natalie Fichter led the way for the offense scoring with 14 points each. Wright also added 14 rebounds and 5 blocks, while Fichter pulled down 9 rebounds and swiped 5 steals.
Meagan Hayden also finished in double-figures adding 11 points.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Golden Eagles took a four-point deficit into the third quarter. However, the Golden Eagles went cold from the field and the Panthers pounced outscoring SU 34-16 and SU found themselves trailing 65-45 with four minutes to play. A pair of
Meagan Hayden three-pointers helped ignite a 10-0 spurt to trim the Greenville lead to 65-55 with 2:32 remining. Bre Anthony knocked down a three-pointer with 1:06 remining to cut the lead to single digits and Hanna Renfro converted a layup to get SU within five points with 42 seconds to play. However, the Golden Eagles were not able to complete the comeback as an Anthony three-pointer missed the mark and a with 29 seconds to go and a turnover followed on SU's next possession allowing Greenville to dribble out the clock.
The team looks to bounce back from Saturday when they travel to St. Louis to take on conference rival Webster Wednesday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m. ET.
