LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding baseball team went 2-1 during the Derby City Classic, winning against Dubuque and Ohio Northern.
GAME ONE
SPALDING 8 – DUBUQUE 0
The Golden Eagles opened the Derby City Classic with two runs in the first inning against Dubuque. The Eagles were then held scoreless until the fifth inning. From there, Spalding took over and scored in each remaining inning, walking away with the 8-0 shutout win against Dubuque.
NOTABLE STATS
Garrett Wilson led the team with four hits, three runs and two RBI's.
Zach Jones dominated, throwing six innings tallying 13 strikeouts and only allowing three hits.
GAME TWO
AURORA 7 – SPALDING 1
Spalding started off the game scoring in the bottom of the first. Aurora then answered right back with a run in the second. Spalding was held scoreless the rest of the game, unable to connect on many pitches. Aurora took the game over scoring two in the fifth and three in the seventh, taking the victory from the Golden Eagles with a score-line of 7-1.
NOTABLE STATS
Garrett Wilson led the team with two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.
Evan Trentman,
Eric Meyer and
Mitchell Langley all tallied a hit in the loss against Aurora.
Jack Parisi suffered the loss in five innings pitched, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out nine.
GAME THREE
SPALDING 8 – OHIO NORTHERN 6
Ohio Northern started the game off hot, scoring two in the top of the first but the Eagles were able to answer back with their own pair in the bottom of that inning. Ohio Northern struck back with four runs in the third. Continuing the tennis style of back and forth play, Spalding returned three runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Another big three-run fifth inning helped Spalding pull ahead of the Bears and the Golden Eagles held Ohio Northern scoreless the rest of the game. Spalding won in a tough game 8-6.
NOTABLE STATS
Eric Meyer and
Isaac Lineberry led the Golden Eagles each tallying two hits in the win. Both were able to hit a single and a double.
Jarrett Wantye picked up his first win of the season throwing a solid three and one-thirds innings in relief. Wantye got two strikeouts and only allowed two hits.
Zach Vogt got his second save on the season, having two strikeouts and no hits on two and two-thirds innings pitched.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action in a three-game series against Penn State Behrend at home starting with a double-header Saturday, February 29
th. First pitch is scheduled to be at 1:00 pm.
