Golden Eagle Nine split games on opening weekend

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding baseball team started their season off with a pair of wins over the weekend, splitting two-game series with both Anderson University and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER
GAME ONE
UW-WHITEWATER 11 – SPALDING 0
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Eagles began to fall off, quickly dropping to a 9-0 deficit at the end of the third inning. Spalding held their own the rest of the way, giving up a run to the Warhawks in the fifth and seventh innings. Mitchell Langley, Jarrett Wantye, and Michael Hill each had a hit in the game, leading the way for the Golden Eagles.

NOTABLE STATS
In a game where not much went their way, Langley, Wantye, and Hill split Spalding's trio of hits. Zach Jones suffered the loss on the bump, allowing 9 runs, 5 earned, while striking out 1 batter in 3.0 innings pitched.

GAME TWO
SPALDING 8 – UW-WHITEWATER 6
Game two against the Warhawks went much better for the Golden Eagles. After leading at the end of the first inning, neither team could bring in a run. In the fifth, both Spalding and UW-Whitewater brought in a pair of runs, putting the score at 4-3 in favor of Spalding. After giving up the lead in the seventh inning to a pair of Warhawk runs, Spalding grew ever-more determined to win. In the bottom of the eighth inning, down 6-4, Spalding stormed back, putting up four runs to take an 8-6 lead. They successfully defended the lead in the top of the ninth, defeating the Warhawks 8-6.

NOTABLE STATS
Evan Trentman, Eric Meyer, and Michael Speck each had a pair of hits to lead Spalding's batters. Jace Pinkston led the way with two RBIs. Logan Koch got the win for the Golden Eagles, pitching the last two outs of the eighth inning and Garrett Wilson got the save, finishing off the Warhawks in the ninth inning.

ANDERSON UNIVERSITY
GAME ONE

SPALDING 4 – ANDERSON 2
After a scoreless first four innings from both sides, the Golden Eagles brought in a run to match the Ravens at 1-1. The scoring continued in the sixth inning where Spalding began to pull away, scoring twice to take a 3-2 lead. After scoring the lone run in the seventh inning, the Golden Eagles held the Ravens scoreless for the remainder of the game, taking the victory 4-2.

NOTABLE STATS
Evan Trentman led the Golden Eagles with two hits. Garrett Mathews threw 10 strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings pitched, while giving up only one run. Adam Weining got the win and Zach Vogt earned the save for the Golden Eagles.

GAME TWO
ANDERSON 14 – SPALDING 6
Spalding got the game rolling, scoring first in the bottom of the opening inning. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, the game began to slip away. The second inning saw four Ravens cross the plate, putting Anderson ahead 4-1. The Ravens scored five more runs over the next three innings while Spalding put up two. Scoring in the first, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth innings, Spalding managed to at least stay consistent throughout a game that had little upside as the Golden Eagles fell 14-6.

NOTABLE STATS
Evan Trentman and Eric Meyer led the Golden Eagles with two hits. Meyer's hits were both good for doubles and he also brought in a pair of RBIs. Spalding was also supported by Mitchell Langley who drove in two RBIs as well. Jarrett Wantye took the loss allowing 4 runs, 2 earning, while striking out 2 batters in 2.0 innings pitched.
