2019 Spalding softball season preview

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With the 2019 softball season quickly approaching, the Spalding Golden Eagles look to build off their sixth-place finish in the SLIAC conference a season ago. Last year, Spalding went 17-16 overall and 9-9 in conference play.

The Golden Eagles bring back nearly their entire starting line-up from last season, including three members of the 2018 SLIAC All-Conference team. Sophomore Olivia Carter, led the team in batting average hitting .433 with 23 RBIs in 2018, and is looking to carry that into a strong 2019 season. Also returning is sophomore Jennifer Peffley, the Louisville native started 26 games earning second team all-conference honors. On the season, Peffley finished the season batting .386 and a .442 on-base percentage. Junior, Addison Morris, a third team all-conference returns after hitting .404 in 47 at bats, and was a perfect 14-for-14 on stolen bases. The Golden Eagles also return Ally Klein and Lindsey Hubbard and Grace Sweat in the infield. Klein, a sophomore second baseman led the team and finished third in the conference with 16 stolen bases. Klein also led the team in runs scored with 27. Grace Sweat returns at first base finishing with six walks and four homeruns in the 2018 season. Hubbard, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, returns to lead the infield for her senior season. The sure-gloved shortstop finished 2018 with a .968 fielding percentage, with 52 putouts and 68 assists, while helping turn three double plays.

The Golden Eagles open the season Sunday, March 10 at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C. SU opens the three-day event with a pair of games against Medaille College at 11:30 am ET and wrap up the day taking on SUNY-Polytech at 1:30 pm ET.
