MYRLE BEACH, S.C. – After winning eight of nine games in Myrtle Beach, to open the season, the Spalding softball team is off to the best start in program history. Here's a quick rundown of each of the Golden Eagles games in Myrtle Beach.
GAME ONE
SPALDING 7 – MEDAILLE COLLEGE 6
For Spalding's first run of the season,
Grace Sweat scored from a single by
Callie Janek in the second inning. In the bottom of the second, Medaille scored two runs from a triple. The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the seventh to make the score 7-2. Medaille made a late run and scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Spalding held on to secure its first win of the season.
GAME TWO
SPALDING 7 – SUNY POLY 2
SUNY Poly jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring two runs in the first. After the first inning,
Chloe Skorija and the Golden Eagles shut down SUNY Poly. Spalding had a terrific sixth inning by scoring seven runs.
Brianna Eatmon started Spalding off with a RBI single to left.
Abby Booker singled up the middle for two RBI's.
Ally Klein reached base on a fielder's choice, which also scored a run. Spalding added another run on an error by SUNY Poly and ended its multiple run inning with a single to right field by
Olivia Carter that scored two runs. After Spalding's impressive sixth inning, they went on to win its second game of the year, 7-2.
GAME THREE
SPALDING 8 – LA ROCHE COLLEGE 3
In the first inning,
Ally Klein scored the first run of the game; and
Olivia Carter hit in a run with her single to right field. La Roche scored one in the first on a double, which made the score 2-1.
Abby Booker had an RBI single to the field in the third to make the score 3-1. The Golden Eagles had a four-run inning in the seventh. Carter and Booker added their second hits and RBI's of the day, and
Jaycee Head scored the second run of the inning.
Maranda Thomas hit a triple to center that scored two runs to end the inning. SUNY Poly scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 8-3, but Spalding's great seventh inning led them to its third win of the season to extend their record to 3-0 on the season.
GAME FOUR
SPALDING 2 – PENN COLLEGE 0
Olivia Carter put on a show with her pitching performance against Penn College. She allowed zero runs and only four hits and added four strikeouts to her second win of the season. Spalding score its two runs in the top of the seventh.
Grace Sweat singled to center for an RBI, and
Olivia Carter extended the lead with a sacrifice fly to center field. Carter led Spalding to its fourth win of the season with a 2-0 win over Penn.
GAME FIVE
SPALDING 15 – MORRISVILLE STATE COLLEGE 3
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first with an RBI single by
Maranda Thomas and
Christy Davis.
Molly Wallace hit a two-run single to center, and
Stephanie Fries hit in a run and reached base safely with a fielder's choice. Morrisville scored two in the second inning to cut Spalding's lead to 5-3, but SU scored ten runs in the second, third, and fourth inning. Thomas and Fries had RBI singles. Wallace reached on an error, while scoring two runs for Spalding.
Amilia Hall singled and advanced to second on an error, while adding an RBI.
Kailey Reed singled to left for two RBI's. Wallace hit her second single and added her fifth RBI of the game.
Brooke Smith added an RBI, and
Brianna Eatmon ended the game with an RBI double to left. Spalding extends its win streak to 5-0.
GAME SIX
IMMACULATA UNIVERSITY 3 – SPALDING 1
In the top of the third, Immaculata singled and scored two unearned runs.
Olivia Carter hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to make the score 2-1 Immaculata. In the bottom of the sixth, Immaculata added another run on a single. Carter only gave up one earned run in her pitching performance against Immaculata. Spalding received its first loss of the season, and now have a record of 5-1.
GAME SEVEN
SPALDING 11 – SHAWNEE STATE UNIVERSITY (OHIO) 6
Shawnee State University jumped out on top of the first inning with scoring two runs, but Spalding answered with seven runs of its own in the bottom of the first.
Maranda Thomas and
Avery Morris hit RBI singles.
Bethany Wright hit a three-run double.
Ally Klein reach based on an error, while scoring two runs for SU. Spalding added an additional three runs in the second from a double by Thomas and from a two-run single by Wright. Shawnee State scored a combined three runs in the fourth and fifth inning to make the score 10-6 Spalding.
Grace Sweat adds an RBI for the final run of the game. Spalding gets its sixth win of the season for a record of 6-1.
GAME EIGHT
SPALDING 4 – FRANCISCAN UNIVERSITY 1
Olivia Carter adds another impressive pitching performance for the year. She allowed one run and three hits and had seven strikeouts in seven innings for her third win of the season. In the bottom of the first, Carter helps herself with a single to left that scored two runs.
Avery Morris had a sacrifice fly in the first to make the score 3-0 Spalding. Franciscan University scores one on an RBI groundout in the fourth.
Grace Sweat hits an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. SU wins 4-1 and receives yet another strong performance from
Olivia Carter.
GAME NINE
SPALDING 6 – CAIRN UNIVERSITY 4
Spalding started off hot with scoring three runs in the first three innings.
Brooke Smith hit a two-run single, and
Molly Wallace hit an RBI single. Cairn scored two runs in the fourth; but the Golden Eagles added two of their own from an RBI double by Smith and from an RBI single by
Lexie Shoup, which made the score 6-2 Spalding. Cairn made a late threat and scored two runs, but Spalding finished out the game strong to secure its eighth win of the year.
UP NEXT
The Golden Eagles will be back in action March 22
nd at home for a doubleheader against Hanover College at 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Spalding will soon follow with two consecutive doubleheaders, the first at home against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at home March 23
rd at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm, and hit the road to open SLIAC play at Blackburn College March 24
th at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.
