Cisse header pushes Golden Eagles into championship game

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding men's soccer team battled past Greenville, 1-0, in the SLIAC Tournament semifinal game Wednesday evening advancing to the championship game Friday at Principia. The win avenged a 2-1 loss to the Panthers just two weeks ago and punched the Golden Eagles into the championship game for the second time in the past four seasons.

THE BASICS

SCORE: Spalding 1 – Greenville 0
LOCATION: Athletic Fields Complex | Louisville, Ky.
RECORDS: Spalding: 13-4-3 | Greenville: 10-9-0

HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a back and forth game from the start for both teams, with Spalding and Greenville having ample opportunities to score but capitalizing on none. In the 18th minute of play, Greenville had a great opportunity to score with a bending shot towards the right post. Not to be outdone by the opponent however, Trevor Massa made a diving save to keep the score knotted at 0-0. Although neither team held a true advantage for most of the first half, Spalding began to slowly take the reins.

- Starting off the second half, the game remained a battle with the heavy rainfall proving to be a large factor. The Golden Eagles fought through the rain and began to pull ahead of the Panthers with about half hour left in the game. Spalding began to drive shot after shot at the Greenville keeper, eventually drawing a corner in the 68th minute. As Chadrack Mulondani set the ball for the Golden Eagle corner, the clock clicked into the 69th minute. Mulondani played a perfect ball to fellow freshman Alioune Cisse who headed home the goal to take the lead. Excellent defensive play and stellar goalkeeping finished out the final 20 minutes of play, leading Spalding to the SLIAC Championship game.

UP NEXT
