HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spalding pushed the bill early and often in the first half, taking eight shots in the first 30 minutes of play. In the 32
nd minute, the Golden Eagle attack finally prevailed as
Kornell Hilliard put his 18
th goal of the season in the back of the net. Spalding's defense held the Principia attack in check through the first 45 minutes, allowing only six shots to a typically potent offense. Goalkeeper
Trevor Massa continued his superb season, saving four of the six shots in the first half and watching the other two sail wide.
- The second half started much worse for the Golden Eagles as they couldn't seem to put together a solid run up the field. This combined with some miscommunication on defense allowed Principia to tie the game in the 52
nd minute. With the game even, Spalding revived their defensive work from where they left off in the first half. A back and forth battle, Spalding and Principia headed into the final 10 minutes of play still knotted at a goal a-piece. Then, in a moment of heartache and elation, Principia scored the winning goal in the 85
th minute of play.
- The Golden Eagles ended their season with a 13-5-3 record including 6-2-1 in conference play. Spalding also sported three first team All-SLIAC, one second team All-SLIAC, and two third team All-SLIAC honors as well as both offensive and defensive players of the year in conference.
