Spalding sweeps Fontbonne in straight sets

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University volleyball team defeated Fontbonne in the first game of a double-header. The Golden Eagles won in 3 sets Wednesday evening, moving to 5-11 for the season, 4-3 in SLIAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a back and forth beginning caused the first set to knot at 8-8, Spalding surged ahead of the Griffins for nine straight points. Mya Summers greatly helped the Golden Eagle attack, providing six assists in the first set. The Golden Eagles also scored six points off service aces. Their stellar attacking play lead Spalding to take the first set 25-11.
 
- In the second set, Mya Summers pushed her total to 13 assists on the night. Brittany Rickert followed closely behind Summers' seven assists, adding six of her own to the Spalding stat line. In a close second set, the strong Golden Eagle defense lifted Spalding over the Griffins 25-20.
 
- Spalding came into the third set firing on all cylinders, taking a commanding 8-1 lead quickly. From there, the team went on an offensive tear, leading to a 14-3 lead for the Golden Eagles. Spalding went on to win 25-9 in the third set, with Mya Summers adding five more assists, bringing her game-total to 18. Haley Just also guided the Spalding offense with four service aces, three of which coming in the third set. Savannah Kruse added eight kills to her season total, all of which coming off assists from Mya Summers.

UP NEXT
The Golden Eagles take on Transylvania University at 7:00 pm in the second game of the double header. Following that, Spalding will host MacMurray College and Eureka College in another double header Friday night. Games will begin at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm respectively.
