Golden Eagles Fall To No. 7 Webster, 16-10

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding baseball team fell to No. 7 ranked Webster, 16-10, Friday at Robert E. Smith field in Greenville, Ill. The Golden Eagles will face the winning of Greenville and Westminster in the elimination game tonight at 9:30 pm EST.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Spalding got on the scoreboard first plating a trio of runs in the top of the second. Cody Milliner singled to left field bringing in Matt Harper from first for the first run of the inning, and Milliner advanced and scored on a passed ball. Evan Trentman capped off the inning with a single to center field scoring Zane Baker from third.

  • After an eight-run bottom of the second, the Golden Eagles got a run back in the top of the fourth when Milliner singled through the left side bringing Matt Harper in.

  • The Gorloks plated a run in the run in the bottom of the third, but SU matched it in the top of the fourth. Garrett Wilson doubled to right center and raced home on a Clay Kelly single through the left side.

  • Webster added six runs in the fifth to put the Golden Eagles in a 10-run deficit. However, the Golden Eagles started to chip away. First, in the sixth when Wilson hit his second double of the game driving in Trentman. SU added another run in the seventh, when Quenton Brownlee homered to center field, his third home run of the weekend. SU gained three more runs in the top of the eighth when Eric Meyer lifted a three-run homer over the wall in left center scoring Baker and Trentman to cut the lead to, 15-10, but could not complete the rally falling 16-10.

  • STAT LEADERS
  • Garrett Wilson led the Golden Eagles at the plate going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored.

  • Eric Meyer drove in a team-high three runs all coming on a three-run homer, while Cody Milliner finished two runs batted in going 2-for-5.

  • Quenton Brownlee and Zane Baker also had a pair of hits. Brownlee highlighted his day with his third home run of the tournament, while Baker went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.

  • Jack Parisi (5-3) suffered the loss allowing six runs, five earned, while striking out one batter and walking five, in 1.1 innings pitched.

  • FOR THE FOES
  • Kyler Kent led the Gorloks going 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.

  • C.J. Lee (7-3) earned the win, giving up nine runs, on 11 hits, while striking out six and walking four, in 7.0 innings pitched.
