Golden Eagles Wins SLIAC Tournament Opener, 7-3, Over Westminster

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding baseball team won their SLIAC Tournament opener over Westminster, 7-3, Thursday at Robert E. Smith field in Greenville, Ill. The Golden Eagles improve to 31-10 on season and face the winner of #1 Webster vs. #2 Greenville tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Quenton Brownlee lifted a ball high into the air that carried just over the left field wall to put SU ahead, 1-0.

  • Following a pair of Blue Jay runs in the top of the fifth, senior Clay Kelly hit a three-run bomb to left field driving in Evan Trentman and Eric Meyer to put the Golden Eagles back in front, 4-2.

  • SU added three more runs in the seventh inning extending the lead to five runs. A Matt Harper sacrifice fly to center field scored Garrett Wilson for the first run of the inning. Q Brownlee hit his second homer of the game, this time to center field, scoring Kelly for the final runs of the game.

  • STAT LEADERS
  • Quenton Brownlee batted in three runs going 2-for-4 with two home runs.

  • Clay Kelly also drove in a trio of runs coming on a go-ahead three-run homer.

  • Garrett Wilson had a solid day going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

  • Jimi Keating (9-1) earned the victory holding the Blue Jays to two runs, on seven hits, while striking out 12 batters and walking none, in 8.0 innings pitched.

  • FOR THE FOES
  • Nick Bohlmann led the Blue Jays going 2-for-5 with two runs batted-in.

  • Ian Cassidy (7-3) suffered the loss allowing seven runs, on nine hits, in seven innings pitched.

  • The Golden Eagles are back on the diamond Friday at 3:00 pm EST taking on the Webster Gorloks in Greenville, Ill.
