No. 15 Golden Eagles Split Doubleheader at Westminster

FULTON, Mo. – The No. 15 ranked Spalding University baseball team split a doubleheader at Westminster Saturday taking game one, 7-5, and falling in game two, 11-8, bringing their record to 22-5 (9-1 SLIAC) on the season.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Golden Eagles plated three runs in second inning to take a 3-2 lead. Matt Harper doubled down the right field line scoring Eric Meyer to get Spalding on the scoreboard. Harper came home on a throwing error to tie it, and Evan Trentman singled allowing Kyle Stevens to score following a throwing error at second.

  • Trailing 5-2, Spalding responded with a three-run fourth inning to pull ahead, 6-5. Harper drove in his second run of the game singling to second scoring Meyer. Quenton Brownlee doubled off the center field wall bringing Harper around from first, and Stevens singled up the middle to put SU in front.

  • Clay Kelly added an insurance run in the seventh inning singling to left center driving in Trentman from third.

  • GAME ONE STAT LEADERS
  • Matt Harper led Spalding at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double driving in and scoring two runs.

  • Eric Meyer went 2-for-4 scoring two runs, and Kyle Stevens finished 1-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored.

  • Reliever Carter Atkinson (3-0) earned the win. The freshman right-hander held the Blue Jays hitless while striking out one batter in 4 and 2/3 innings.

  • FOR THE FOES
  • Nick Bohlmann led the Blue Jays going 1-for-3 including a home run with one RBI and a run scored.

  • Skyler Dickneite (1-1) was hit with the loss giving up seven runs, five earned, on nine hits, while striking out three batters and walking two.

  • GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Golden Eagles struck first when an Eric Meyer fielder's choice brought in Garrett Wilson.

  • Trailing 5-1, SU responded with three runs in the fifth inning. Clay Kelly ripped a two-run double to left field driving in Evan Trentman and Wilson, and Joe Hatcher singled bringing in Kelly from second.

  • Facing a three-run deficit, SU answered with three runs to tie the game 7-7. Wilson drove in Linberry for the first run, Harper singled to short driving in Trentman, and Kelly capped off the inning with a single to center.

  • Quenton Brownlee doubled to left center scoring Jacob Reece for Spalding's final run of the game.

  • GAME TWO STAT LEADERS
  • Clay Kelly drove in a team-high three RBI going 2-for-5 with a double.

  • Garrett Wilson went 3-for-5 with an RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

  • Lane Staples (0-2) suffered the loss allowing one run, on two hits, while striking out one batter and walking three.

  • Blake Strebler had a day going 4-for-5 with four home runs, including a game-winning grand slam.

  • Andrew Boessen (3-2) earned the win giving up one run, on three hits, while striking out two batters in 2.2 innings pitched.
