Golden Eagles Fly Past Transy, 9-4

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding baseball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead and held off a late rally attempt to top Transylvania, 9-4, to improve to 9-2 Tuesday in Lexington, Ky.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Clay Kelly continued to contribute at the plate driving in Spalding's first two runs. The second baseman reach on an error and advanced to third scoring Garrett Wilson in the first, and brought in Jeff Chapuran with a sacrifice fly to center field in the second inning.

  • SU added four runs in the fourth to take a six-run lead. The first two runs scored on sacrifice flies from Dillon Sievert and Quenton Brownlee, and Cody Milliner capped off the inning tripling to left-center field scored Matt Harper and Joe Hatcher.

  • The Golden Eagles added three runs over sixth and seventh inning. With bases loaded in the sixth, Kyle Stevens was hit by a pitch scoring Kelly, and Chapuran doubled to center field scoring Hatcher from third. In the seventh, another error on a Kelly at bat scored Wilson to make the margin 9-0.

  • STAT LEADERS
  • Matt Harper (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate start on the mound. Harper, a junior and usual starter at third base, held the Pioneers scoreless in six innings of action, scattering three hits, while striking out 10 batters and walking one.

  • Cody Milliner went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI.

  • Garrett Wilson finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and went 2-for-2 on stolen bases.

  • Clay Kelly also drove in a pair of runs on a 2-for-5 performance at the plate.

  • FOR THE FOES
  • Michael Blair drove in three of the four Pioneer runs going 2-for-3 with a home run.

  • Colton Hartig (0-1) suffered the loss allowing two runs, three hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

  • UP NEXT
  • The Golden Eagles head to Florida for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational playing four games while in the Sunshine State. SU opens up against UW-La Crosse Sunday, play UMass Dartmouth Monday, take on Ramapo Thursday, and cap off the week against the nation's No. 1 team, UMass Boston on Thursday.
