Golden Eagles Top Concordia-Chicago, 60-44, in Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding women's basketball team used a big second half to open the season with a 60-44 win over Concordia-Chicago Friday evening at the Webster Tip-Off Classic in St. Louis, Mo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Golden Eagles trailed 14-12 after one quarter. SU took a 12-11 lead on a Savanna Pinkston layup, but went 0-for-4 over the final 1:51 allowing the Cougars to pull ahead by two after the first 10 minutes.
- Despite the Cougars going cold from the field, Spalding was unable to take advantage as the Golden Eagles only converted 3-of-13 field goal attempts and found themselves trailing, 22-19, at the half.
- Spalding picked up their pace in the third quarter. After falling behind 24-19, SU responded with a 10-0 run fueled by three points apiece by freshmen Breanna Anthony and Hunter Wright. Another Wright jumper pushed the Golden Eagles lead to 33-28 and SU took a 33-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
- Back-to-back three pointers by Megan Goeing and Maleah Hirn helped the Golden Eagles jump out to a 47-32 lead with 6:26 to play. Allison Just found Wright for a layup to extend Spalding's lead to 18 points; their largest of the game, as SU coasted to a 60-44 win.
- Spalding finished the game shooting 35.6 percent from the field and 26.1 percent from three-point range. Hunter Wright led the Golden Eagles offensively with 10 points going 6-of-8 from the floor and added eight rebounds. Maleah Hirn also finished in double figures scoring 10 points, while adding four rebounds and four assists. Junior Allison Just led Spalding on the boards with 10 rebounds and added eight points.

FOR THE FOES
- The Cougars finished the game shooting 32.7 percent from the field including 19 percent from beyond the arc.
- Michaela Thornton led Concordia-Chicago scoring 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field.

- The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow when they cap off the Webster Tip-Off Classic against Belhaven at 2:00 pm EST in St. Louis, Mo.
