Golden Eagles beat Greenville to clinch piece of SLIAC title

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's soccer team clinched at least a share of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title on Tuesday by defeating visiting Greenville University 2-1 at Champions Trace Park. It is Spalding's second SLIAC regular-season title; the other came in 2016. The Golden Eagles also locked up the right to host next week's SLIAC Tournament.

Freshman Abnel St. Fleur scored both goals to lead Spalding (14-2-1, 7-0-1), which is in position to win the league title outright with one game remaining, against Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday at home. Webster University (5-1-1), which has two games left, is in second place in the league standings, but Spalding holds the head-to-head tiebreaker that guarantees it the No. 1 seed for the four-team conference tournament.

"It's been a remarkable year," Spalding coach Adam Boyer said. "To be 14-2-1 is a testament to the character and resolve of the group. That has been the most impressive thing. Whether we've been up a goal or down a goal, we've kept our composure and remained patient and found ways to pull out these games. We've done it in every manner possible." Boyer continued, "For us to win at home today was important. We now know that we'll be hosting (next week). That's a really important aspect of today's result."

Against Greenville (13-4-1, 5-2-1), St. Fleur, a freshman, opened the scoring in the sixth minute with an 18-yard strike into the bottom right corner of the goal. In the 52nd minute, St. Fleur broke a 1-1 tie by finishing on a cross into the box from Mani Bakari. St. Fleur's shot bounced off the cross bar and into the net.

Spalding goalkeeper Trevor Massa (7-0-0) played a remarkable match making nine saves.

The Golden Eagles wrap up regular-season play at home Saturday when they celebrate senior day taking on Iowa Wesleyan at 3:00 pm EST.
