LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
Alex Martin nearly recorded a triple-double leading the Spalding women's basketball team to a 69-57 win over Fontbonne Saturday afternoon at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles improved to 6-10 on the season and 4-4 in SLIAC competition, while Fontbonne fell to 8-10 and 4-5 in SLIAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mackenzie Myers connected from long range 10 seconds into the game and Lelanda Matthews knocked down a jumper in the paint propelling SU to a 5-0 start. The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to as many as 11 points following seven straight points from Megan Goeing. Fontbonne slowly chipped away at Spalding's lead the remainder of the half eventually cutting SU's lead to two points on a Paige Black three-pointer with 23 seconds to play to make the score, 31-29, at the half. Matthews converted a layup on SU's first possession of the second half to push the margin back to four, but a Riley Guffey three sliced their lead back to one at the 7:25 mark. Freshman Hannah Renfro converted an old-fashioned three-point play sparking a 7-0 Spalding run to put the Golden Eagles up, 40-32. Holding a 48-39 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Spalding kept their foot on the gas outscoring the Griffins 14-4 over the first six minutes of the quarter stretching their lead to a game-high 19 points on a Jenna Thornhill layup in transition, and SU went on to earn the victory, 69-57.
Alex Martin paced the Golden Eagles nearly earning a triple-double with 16 points, nine assists and nine rebounds. Lelanda Matthews also had a solid game scoring 11 points going 5-of-8 from the field, while pulling down nine rebounds and blocking two shots.
The Golden Eagles did a great job rebounding holding a plus-22 advantage on the boards.

Paige Black led Fontbonne with a game-high 17 points, while Rylee Stafford added 14.
