Softball Takes Two From Eureka, 7-6 and 4-3

PEORIA, Ill. – The Spalding University softball team took both games of their doubleheader against Eureka, 7-6 and 4-3, Monday evening at the Louisville Slugger Dome in Peoria, Ill. With the wins Golden Eagles improve to 18-16 overall and 10-6 in SLIAC play.

The Golden Eagles used a three-run seventh inning to edge the Red Devils, 7-6, in game one.

Senior outfielder Brooke Lamon led Spalding at the plate going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Laken Heavener also recorded a pair of hits and scored a run, while Lindsey Hubbard drove in two runs going 1-for-3.

Robyn Schoen (9-8) earned the win, giving up six runs, on 13 hits, while striking out three batters and walking zero. Amber Kilburn closed out the seventh inning picking up her third save of the season.

SU got out to a 2-0 lead plating a pair of runs top of the third inning on a pair of RBI-singles by Hubbard and Lamon. Eureka would take a run back in the bottom of the third to cut the SU lead to one run, but Spalding added two more runs in the fifth inning to pad the margin to three runs. However, the Red Devils would score three runs to knot the score at 4-4 heading into the final two innings. After a scoreless sixth, the Golden Eagles would regain the lead, 7-4, with a three-run seventh.  Amber Kilburn doubled down the left field line driving in Mackenzie Henderson for the first run of the inning, and Lamon followed with another shot down the left field line scoring Hubbard and Kilburn for what would be the deciding runs. Eureka attempted a rally in the bottom of the seventh when Kali George hit a two-run bomb over the left field wall cutting the lead to one, but three consecutive groundouts would squash the comeback attempt as SU would hang on to win, 7-6.

In game two, the Golden Eagles showed grit coming back from a 3-0 deficit to top Eureka, 4-3.

Leftfielder Kaylin Rucker led the Golden Eagle hitters going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Brooke Lamon and Lindsey Hubbard both also drove in a run apiece for SU.

Amber Kilburn (3-0) earned the win, limiting the Red Devils to no runs, on two hits, while striking out two batters and walking zero.

SU found themselves in 3-0 hole following a Morgan Osborn two-run homer in the first, and RBI single in the third. The Golden Eagles started to climb back into the game in the fifth when a Caroline Hale leadoff homer to center field put them on the scoreboard. LeeAnna Hundley raced home on a Hubbard groundout for the final run of the inning cutting the deficit to one run. Spalding completed the comeback in the seventh. A fielding error by the shortstop allowed Heaver to score the tying run, and a

Rucker single down the left field line scored Mackenzee Sawyer for the game-winning run.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Tuesday afternoon wrapping up the regular with a doubleheader against Blackburn College at 1 pm in Springfield, Ill.
