LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team defeated Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, 5-4, to sweep their doubleheader. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 11-8 overall. The loss drops the Fighting Engineers to 9-11 on the season.
Amber Kilburn (2-0) picked up the win, Alexis Price (0-1) was hit with the loss, and
Robyn Schoen picked up her first save on the season.
Brianna Eatmon led the way at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double and three runs driven in.
Samantha Klein went 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a pair of runs scored.
Brooke Lamon was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
LeeAnna Hundley went 1-for-3 with a double and a run driven in.
Lindsey Hubbard was 2-for-4, making her 14-for-16 in four games on the weekend.
The Golden Eagles drew first blood in this one as they scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Engineers responded with a pair of runs in the top of the next inning, and tied things up in the third on a base hit. Spalding regained the lead in the bottom half of the third on an Eatmon groundout and a Hundley double, making it a 5-3 ballgame. The Engineers made things interesting in the top of the seventh as they started the inning with a double and a single, followed by a sac-fly, bringing the game within one. The next batter hit a single up the middle, putting runners on first and second with just one out but that was as close as the Engineers would come as Schoen struck out the final two batters and the Eagles held on for the 5-4 victory.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Wednesday, April 12
th, as they welcome College of Mount St. Joseph to Holy Cross Field in doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:30 pm EST.
