Williams gets 200th Career Victory with 5-1 Win Over Principia

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team defeated Principia College, 5-1, to sweep the doubleheader. With the win, Head Coach Art Williams earned his 200th career victory. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 9-8 overall, 3-3 in conference play. The loss drops the Panthers to 2-8 overall, 0-6 in conference play. Amber Kilburn (1-0) picks up the victory, while Aleigha Russell (0-4) was handed the loss.

Samantha Klein led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk, home run, and two runs driven in. Lindsey Hubbard was 4-for-4 with a run scored, making her a perfect 8-for-8 on the day. Grace Terrell went 2-for-3 with a double, stolen base and run batted in. Laken Heavner went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, as they scored three runs in a four-hit bottom of the first inning. The Panthers responded in the top of the second with a run-scoring base hit. Spalding got that run back in the third, though, as Klein took Russell deep for a solo shot. They tacked on one more for insurance purposes in the bottom of the fifth as pinch runner Mackenzee Sawyer came across to score on a Hale single. That was all the Eagles would need, as Robyn Schoen threw three shutdown innings in relief to finish off the sweep.

The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow, April 9th, as they welcome Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to Holy Cross Field in doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 pm EST.
