MT. PLEASANT, Iowa – The Spalding University softball team picked up a pair of victories Saturday afternoon in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
Spalding took the first game, 10-4. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 13-16 overall, 5-6 in conference play. The loss drops the Tigers to 10-19 overall, 5-8 in conference play.
Olivia Leet (5-9) picked up the win, while Skyler Rodgers (0-1) was handed the loss.
Brooke Lamon led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple, a pair of walks, four runs batted in, and two runs scored.
Laken Heavner went 2-for-2 with a stolen base, two walks, and four runs scored.
Mackenzie Henderson went 2-for-3 with a solo home run.
Caroline Hale was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and run batted in.
The Golden Eagles crossed the plate first in this one as they opened the top of the first with a walk and a single, going on to score three runs in the inning. They added to their lead with a run in the third, before breaking out for four runs in the fifth inning. Iowa Wesleyan responded with four of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, cutting the Spalding lead in half. The Eagles, however, got a couple runs back in the sixth, including the Henderson home run. That was all the Golden Eagles would need as they went on to victory.
The Golden Eagles won the second game, 5-3. The win improves the Eagles to 14-16 overall, 6-6 in conference play. The loss drops the Tigers to 10-20 overall, 5-9 in conference play.
Olivia Leet (6-9) picks up the win, while Julie Dodd (5-11) is hit with the loss. Leet threw six innings of three run ball, in what was her second start of the day.
Samantha Klein led the way at the plate in game two, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run batted in, and run scored.
Brooke Lamon went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored.
Kaylin Rucker went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run batted in.
Lindsey Hubbard went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored.
Mackenzie Henderson was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Spalding drew first blood in this one on a Rucker run scoring single in the top of the second inning. Iowa Wesleyan responded quickly as McKenzie Copher homered to lead off the bottom half of the second, tying the game. The game was deadlocked at one until the Golden Eagles broke out in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on five hits. The Tigers made things interesting with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning but that was as close as they would make it, giving the Eagles the 5-3 win.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, April 23
rd, as they welcome the MacMurray College Highlanders to Holy Cross Field in Senior Day action. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 pm EST.
