Softball Sweeps MacMurray on Senior Day, 10-1 and 3-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team swept MacMurray University, 10-1 and 3-2, in their Sunday afternoon doubleheader.

Spalding took the first game, 10-1. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 15-16 overall, 7-6 in conference play. The loss drops the Highlanders to 2-31 on the season, 1-14 in conference play. Robyn Schoen (7-7) picked up the win, while Kiersten Hann (0-5) was handed the loss.

Mackenzie Henderson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Caroline Hale went 2-for-3 with a two stolen bases and two runs scored. Grace Terrell went 1-for-2 with a walk, run batted in, and run scored. Lindsey Hubbard was 1-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.

The Golden Eagles crossed first in this one in the bottom of the first as they took advantage of a MacMurray error to take the one to nothing lead. They added to their lead in the second, courtesy of a Henderson run scoring single. The Highlanders responded with a run in the top of the third, cutting the Eagle lead in half. Spalding got that run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Brooke Lamon sacrifice fly. The Golden Eagles tacked on seven runs in the fourth inning and that was all Schoen would need as she finished off the Highlanders in the fifth.

Spalding took the second game, 3-2. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 16-16 overall, 8-6 in conference play. The loss drops the Highlanders to 2-32 overall, 1-15 in conference play. Again, Robyn Schoen (8-7) got the win, while Haley Stewart (2-12) was hit with the loss.

Laken Heavner led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs driven in. Caroline Hale went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Grace Terrell went 1-for-2 with a walk, double, and run scored. Senior Brooke Lamon pitched in with a 1-for-3 afternoon in her final career home game for Spalding.

The Highlanders drew first blood in this one as they scored a pair in the top of the first inning. The Eagles responded in the second with a run of their own, cutting the lead in half. Spalding tied it at two in the bottom of the third, thanks to a Highlander error. The game was deadlocked at two until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Hale came across to score on an infield hit by Heavner. The team's other senior, Schoen, came out in the seventh and shut down the Highlanders, sealing the win in her final home game.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, April 29th, as they head to Eureka, Illinois to take on the Red Devils of Eureka College in doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 pm EST.
