Softball Drops Both Games Against Westminster, 5-2 and 12-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University Softball Team dropped both games of their doubleheader against Westminster College, 5-2 and 12-1, Sunday afternoon at Holy Cross Field.

Westminster took the first game from SU, 5-2. The win improves the Blue Jays to 10-9 overall, 3-0 in conference play. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 6-6 overall, 1-2 in conference play. Alyson Hahn (5-2) picked up the win, while Robyn Schoen (3-4) was hit with the loss.

Brooke Lamon had a solid day at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a triple and two runs batted in. Laken Heavner went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored. Mackenzie Henderson was 1-for-2.

It was a head to head between Schoen and Hahn through the first five innings. The Blue Jays got to Schoen in the sixth, though, as they loaded the bases on a walk, double, and fielder's choice. The bases were then cleared by catcher Aubrie Vaugh, as she took Schoen deep over the fence for a grand slam. The Golden Eagles made a game of it, as they responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth on the Lamon triple. That was as close as they would make it, though, as the Blue Jays went on to victory.

Westminster trounced Spalding in the second game as they won big, 12-1. The win improves the Blue Jays to an 11-9 overall record, 4-0 in conference play. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 6-7 overall, 1-3 in conference play. Katie Price (5-2) picked up the victory, while Olivia Leet (3-3) was handed the loss.

Caroline Hale had a good game at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double, stolen base, and run scored. Laken Heavner went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and run batted in.

It was another tight ballgame through the first five innings, as the Golden Eagles scored one in the third on the Heavner single, with the Blue Jays responding in the top of the fourth on an Aubrie Vaugh home run making it a 1-1 game. It stayed that way until the top of the sixth, when the Blue Jays' bats exploded for eleven runs on nine hits. Price came out and closed the door on the Eagles, finishing off the sweep.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Thursday, April 6th, as they head across the Sherman Minton Bridge to New Albany, Indiana to take on the Grenadiers of IUS. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 pm EST.
