Golden Eagles Drop Pair at Greenville, 7-4 and 8-3

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Greenville College, 7-4 and 8-3.

Spalding fell to Greenville in game one, 7-4. The win improves the Panthers to 14-10 overall, 7-2 in conference play. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 12-12 on the season, 4-5 in conference play. Brianna Anderson (8-4) picked up the win, while Robyn Schoen (6-7) was handed the loss.

Laken Heavner had a solid game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and a run scored. Brooke Lamon went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Grace Terrell went 1-for-2 with a walk and run batted in. Kaylin Rucker went 1-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored. Mackenzie Henderson was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored.

Schoen and Anderson were battling through the first three innings, as the Panthers finally got to Schoen in the fourth with a run on a Kayla Speaks single. They added to their lead in the fifth, as Schoen was taken deep for a two-run home run. The Golden Eagles answered with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth, including a two-run single from Lamon. The Panthers, however, would get those runs back, plus more, as they scored four runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning. The Eagles got one back in the top of the seventh, but that was as close as they would come as the Panthers went on to victory.

Spalding dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 8-3. The win improves the Panthers to 15-10 overall, 8-2 in conference play. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 12-13 overall, 4-6 in conference play. Kaitlyn Johnson (4-1) picked up the win, while Olivia Leet (4-6) was hit with the loss.

Samantha Klein had a solid game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and run batted in. Kaylin Rucker went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, run batted in, and run scored. Laken Heavner went 1-for-4 with a double and run scored. Grace Terrell was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Golden Eagles crossed first in this one as they scored one on an Amber Kilburn single in the top of inning number two. They added to their lead in the third on a pair of run scoring singles from Rucker and Klein. Greenville answered with five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 5-3 lead. The Panthers added three more runs in the fourth, which was all they would need as they went on to the 8-3 victory.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Tuesday, April 18th, as they head across the Sherman Minton Bridge to take on the Grenadiers of Indiana University Southeast in midweek doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 pm EST.
