LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team defeated Webster University, 3-2, in the first game of their Saturday doubleheader. The win improves the Golden Eagles to a 6-4 overall record. The loss drops the Gorloks to 12-8 on the season.
Robyn Schoen (3-3) picked up the win, while Chelsea Thornley (6-3) was hit with the loss. Schoen threw seven innings of two-run ball, while racking up eleven strikeouts and walking just one on her way to the complete-game victory.
Brooke Lamon led the way at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI-double, and a run scored.
Mackenzie Henderson went 1-for-3 with an RBI-double.
Samantha Klein was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
The Golden Eagles scored first in the bottom of the first inning, as Lamon doubled to center field driving in one.
Caroline Hale added to the lead as she reached on an error, which drove in Lamon. The Gorlocks cut into the Spalding lead in the third on an RBI-double by shortstop Abby Burroughs, making it a 2-1 ballgame. The Eagles would respond and get that run back in the bottom half of the inning, though, as Henderson doubled and drove in a run. The Gorlocks made things interesting by bringing the game back within one in the fifth, but that is as close as they would get as Spalding went on to the 3-2 victory.
The Golden Eagles are back in action after this game, as they take on Webster University in the second game of their doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:15 pm EST.
