Golden Eagles notch second consecutive SLIAC win topping Westminster, 67-53

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's basketball team won a hard fought game, 67-53, Wednesday at DSG. The win improves the Golden Eagles record to 11-8 overall and 6-5 in the SLIAC.
 
Three Golden Eagles finished in double figures. Sophomore Alex Martin led the way scoring 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while passing out five assists on the evening. Senior Maya Hardin also contributed 13 points, and Brandy Hunter added 10 points.  
 
The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start falling behind, 8-3, with 5:06 left in the first quarter. The two teams battled back and forth with Westminster holding a 14-7 lead. However, SU responded with a 5-0 run to end first quarter. Micaiah Bowden capped off the run with a jumper at the buzzer cutting their deficit to two heading into the second.  In the second, Spalding found their mark scoring 20 points in the period. Alex Martin and Brandy Hunter helped ignite the offense accounting for 14 of the teams points. SU outscored the Blue Jays 6-4 over the first 3:18 to knot the score at 18-18. The Golden Eagles ended the half on a 14-7 spurt with help from back-to-back threes by Alex Martin and Brandy Hunter giving Spalding the lead, 32-25, at the break.  
 
Spalding started the third where they left off in the second, opening with a 9-3 run to over the first 4:02 of play to extend their lead to 13 points at 41-28. Westminster was able to make a run of their own cutting Spalding lead to seven with 4:29 left in the quarter, 43-36. Nevertheless, a sequence of back-to-back baskets from Alex Matrin and good defense late in the third kept Spalding in front, 53- 42, heading into the final period. The fourth quarter consisted of both teams trading baskets the majority of the period, as the Golden Eagles kept the margin above 10 cruising to a 67-53 victory.
 
Up next, Spalding hosts Greenville College February 1 at DSG. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 pm EST.
