Golden Eagles Fall to In-State Foe Transylvania, 72-59

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's basketball team lost to in-state foe Transylvania, 72-59, Saturday night in Lexington, Ky. The Golden Eagles record drops to 4-8 on the season, while Transy improves to 6-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Golden Eagles and Pioneers were neck and neck in the first quarter. The Pios led 14-10 with three minutes to play, but trio of free throws and a Megan Goeing layup fueled a 5-0 SU run giving the Golden Eagles a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. Spalding pushed their lead to nine points following an and-one by Alex Martin with 5:56 remaining in the second quarter, but Transy outscored SU 12-6 to trim the Golden Eagles lead to three points at halftime. A turnover plagued third quarter helped the Pioneers close the gap. Transy's Kristen Hayes converted a layup with 14 seconds remaining to give the Pios a 48-46 advantage heading into the final quarter. The Golden Eagles struggled to score in the fourth shooting just 27.8% from the field, while the Pioneers shot a game-high 57.1% as they down SU, 72-59.

- Alex Martin paced the SU offense with 14 points, while Tselem Gahagan added 11 points. Lelanda Matthews and Mackenzie Myers led the Golden Eagles on the boards with seven rebounds apiece. 

FOR THE FOES

- Celia Kline led Transylvania with 20 points and seven assists. Rachel Cox (16), Kristen Hayes (12) and Shelby Boyle (11) also finished in double figures.

- The Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday, January 3 resuming SLIAC play taking on Eureka College. Tipoff is 7:00 pm EST in Eureka, Mo.
