LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's basketball team was triumphant Saturday, topping conference foe Blackburn College, 72-44, at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The win improves the Golden Eagles record to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in SLIAC conference play.
Spalding was led by sophomore
Alex Martin who finished with 21 points and four assists, and senior
Dee Dee Sliter posted her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 assists to go along with five steals.
The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in the contest after storming out to a 12-0 lead to start the game. Spalding held Blackburn in check in the first half, limiting their shooting to only 7-of-29 (24%), while forcing 13 turnovers.
Alex Martin connected on a three-point field goal with two seconds left in the first half to give Spalding a 45-21 lead heading into the locker room.
Spalding started the second half right where they left off,
Alex Martin opened the half with another three-point field goal sparking a 7-0 run to start the second half pushing the Golden Eagles' lead to 55-21, but a 14-point run by Blackburn trimmed the lead to 20 points late in the third quarter. However, Spalding finished the game on a 17-9 run to seal the win.
Next, Spalding travels to Jacksonville, Ill. Wednesday, January 18th to take on SLIAC opponent MacMurray College at 2 pm EST.
