LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University women's basketball team was outlasted by Fontbonne, 57-51, Wednesday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The loss drops the Golden Eagles record to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in SLIAC competition.
 
Maya Hardin paced the Spalding offense scoring 12 points, and Alex Martin added seven points and nine rebounds.
 
The shorthanded Golden Eagles, who played without several key players, struggled early shooting 7-of-37 totaling just 18 points in the first half, and went into the locker room at the half trailing 27-18
 
After falling behind by nine at halftime, Spalding made a valiant effort in the second half, but fell just short down the stretch. The Golden Eagles trailed by as much as 13 early in the third quarter, but managed to claw their way back to a 43-43 tie with 4:59 remaining in the forth quarter after consecutive three-pointers from Maya Hardin and Dee Dee Sliter. A strong finish by Fontbonne, however, sealed the game for the Griffins who outscored the Golden Eagles 14-8 in the final five minutes.
 
The Golden Eagles look to bounce back this Saturday, January 14^th when they host Blackburn College. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
