Women's soccer outlasts Heidelberg, 1-0

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Spalding University women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season outlasting Heidelberg, 1-0, in the opening game of the Defiance Purple & Gold Classic in Defiance, Ohio.

Kelsey Kaiser (2-0-0) earned her first shutout of the season collecting four saves. Dee Dee Sliter scored the game's lone goal pushing her total to three goals on the season.

The Golden Eagles controlled possession in the first half taking six shots to Heidelberg's one in the half, including three attempts on-goal. The game-winning goal came in the 38th minute following a foul in the box and yellow card on Heidelberg's Alexandra Farmer. Sliter's penalty kick attempt was blocked by the keeper, but Dee Dee got the rebound and put it in the back of the net.

Heidelberg came out firing in the second half taking three shots on-goal in the first 12 minutes of the half, but Kaiser was in place for the save to keep the Golden Eagles in the lead. Heidelberg would put another shot on-goal in the 70th minute, but again, Kaiser was there for the save. Baylee Tabler had a chance to push the SU lead to two goals in the 73rd minute, but her attempt was saved by the keeper. The final 17 minutes was a defensive battle as each team managed just one shot apiece.

The Golden Eagles will be back on the pitch tomorrow at noon when they take on the host Yellow Jackets in the final game of the Defiance Purple & Gold Classic.
