Golden Eagles soar past Colonels, 16-7

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team defeated Centre, 16-7. The win brings the Golden Eagles record to 17-7, while the loss drops the Colonels below .500 with a 16-17 mark. Dan Sanders (1-0) picked up the victory, while Nick Hoffman (1-3) was hit with the loss.

Kam Bruner led the way for Spalding going 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI's and three runs. Blake Patterson went 2-for-5 with a walk, two RBI's and a run. Nic Chafin went 1-for-4 with three walks and three runs.

The Golden Eagles got on the board first when Centre pitcher Nick Hoffman walked Dillon Sievert with the bases load bringing in Chafin from first to give SU a 1-0 lead through one inning. Centre tied it up in the top of the second when an error at second by Korie Vire allowed Forrest Good to score from second to knot the score, 1-1. SU answered with three runs in the home half of the inning to retake the lead, 4-1. Bruner drove in the first two with a single to right field scoring Chafin and Vire, and Patterson drove in Bruner with a double to right center. Spalding padded their lead adding five runs in the fifth inning. Jacob Woodruff raced home following a passed ball for the first run of the inning. SU plated two more runs. A popup to left was dropped by the left fielder that allowed Matt Harper to score. Another passed ball brought in Austin Drake for third run of the inning, and Chafin beat the pitcher to the plate when he failed to call time following the play. Vire scored the final run of the inning tagging from third following a Patterson fly out to first in foul territory. Centre took five runs back in the top of the sixth, as well as two in the seventh to cut the Golden Eagle margin to two runs, 9-7. The Golden Eagles answered with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to push the lead back to six runs. Vire scored from first on an error in left field following a Bruner single, and SU would score the next three runs on two wild pitches and a passed ball to make the score 13-7, and added three more insurance runs to make the final margin,  

The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action Saturday and Sunday playing a three-game series at MacMurray. SU will kick off the series with a double header Saturday starting at 2:00 pm EST.
