JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team fell to MacMurray College, 3-2 in 11 innings. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 17-8 overall and 7-3 in conference play. With the win, the Highlanders improve to 13-13 overall with a 7-4 mark in the SLIAC. Luke Lavin (1-2) earned the victory, while
Chance Brinley (2-2) was hit with the loss.
Matt Harper led the way for Spalding, going 1-for-3 with a run.
Nic Chafin went 1-for-5 with two stolen bases. The Highlanders were led by Collin Antoine, who went 3-for-4 with a run and a walk.
The Highlanders struck first in the bottom of the fourth when Nick Balkenbusch hit a RBI single, scoring his man on second. MacMurray would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth. An error would allow the batter to reach base and score a runner from third to make 2-0, MacMurray. Spalding would find a rally in the top of the ninth with their backs against the wall. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch would bring Harper home and advance
Jacob Woodruff to third to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Dillon Sievert would step in and hit a sac fly to right field, tying the game at 2-2. MacMurray would win the game when Tyler Deaton led off the bottom of the eleventh inning with a walk-off homerun.
Spalding will close out their series with MacMurray Saturday, April 9
th in double-header action. The first game is scheduled for 2 pm EST with the second game to follow.
