ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding University baseball team couldn't overcome Webster, falling 6-1 and 4-2. The win improves the Gorloks to 23-12 overall and 16-4 in the SLIAC. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 22-15 overall and 12-8 in the conference. In the first game, Josh Fleming (3-0) picked up the victory, while
Kyle Olliges (4-2) was hit with the loss. The second game saw Jack Bensinger (7-2) earn the win, while Mitch Stefani picked up the save.
Jimi Keating (5-4) took the loss.
Korie Vire led the way for Spalding, going 3-for-7 with two runs and a stolen base.
Kam Bruner went 2-for-6, including a homerun, adding a run, a RBI, and a stolen base. Webster was led by Matt Wollnik, who went 4-for-6 with three runs and a stolen base.
In game one, Spalding opened the scoring in the top of the first. Vire singled, advanced to second on a sac bunt, and stole third. An error by the catcher would bring Vire home for a 1-0 lead. The Gorloks would answer with three runs in the bottom half. All three runs would score on a double from Jeff Kammer. Webster would extend their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI double from Brandon Smith. Kyle Uhrich hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-1, Gorloks. The Golden Eagles were unable to find offense late as they fell to Webster.
Webster opened the second game, scoring on a RBI single from Blake Thomas in the bottom of the first. The Gorloks would extend their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second. The scoring was highlighted by a RBI double from Mike Wick. Bruner would put Spalding on the board in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun. Webster would answer in the bottom half to make it 4-1, Gorloks. The Golden Eagles would try to rally in the eighth when
Blake Patterson hit a sac fly to score Vire, making it a 4-2 ballgame. The Webster defense would hold however, closing out the ninth for a win.
Spalding will be back in action Saturday, May 7
th to take Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. The double-header is scheduled to start at 2 pm EDT
