LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team dropped their final two home games to Washington University, 5-4 and 22-5. This drops the Golden Eagles to 22-13 on the season. The Bears improve 27-13. In the first game, Scott Nelson (6-4) picked up the win, while Alex Truss (2) earned the save.
Aaron Mitchell (4-4) was hit with the loss. The second game saw Julian Clarke (4-4) pick up the win, while
Javier Guerra (4-1) was left with the loss.
Brad Speek led the way, going 4-for-7 with three runs.
Blake Patterson went 2-for-4 with two RBI's.
Korie Vire went 2-for-9 with a RBI and a run.
Washington University started the scoring in the top of the third, scratching across two runs. The inning was highlighted by a RBI triple from Christian Santos. The Bears would extend their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth on a Santos double to left-center. Spalding would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on second, Patterson would double down the left field line to make it 3-1, Washington. The Bears would stretch their lead to 5-1 in the eighth on a two RBI double from Austin Darmawan. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom half on a RBI single from Patterson. SU would try to rally in the bottom of the ninth.
Matt Harper singled with runners on second and third to make it 5-3, Washington. Vire would then single to center to make it 5-4, but the rally would fall short.
The Bears' offense erupted in the second inning, hanging eight runs on the board. The biggest catalyst for the scoring outburst was the plethora of errors committed by the Golden Eagle defense. Washinton would add two more runs in the top of the third, led by a RBI single by Ben Browdy. Spalding would finally get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when a groundout would score Speek from third to make it 10-1. The top of the sixth saw the Bears stretch their lead to 13-1, led by a two RBI double from Tate Maider. In the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagle offense would come alive. A fielding error would allow Speek to score from third.
Nolan Simpkins would triple, scoring
Kam Bruner to make it 13-2.
Cody Milliner singled to score Simpkins.
Jacob Woodruff would follow that with a RBI double to make it 13-5, Washington. The Bears would add another run in the top of the seventh before exploding in the eighth. Washington scored eight runs on five hits to put the game out of reach at 22-5. Spalding would not find an answer late as the game came to an end.
Spalding will be back in action Friday, April 29
th when they travel to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Webster University in a double-header affair. Game is scheduled for 6 pm EDT.
