LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team took both games of a double-header against Iowa Wesleyan University, 1-0 and 10-0. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 22-11 overall and 12-6 in the conference. The Tigers fall to 11-19 overall and 5-9 in the SLIAC. In the first game,
Kyle Olliges (4-1) picked up the victory, while Eric Torres (1-5) was hit with the loss. The second game saw
Jimi Keating (5-3) pick up the victory, while Jarred Boyer (4-2) was tagged with the loss.
Nolan Simpkins had a solid performance going 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI's, and a run.
Matt Harper went 1-for-4 with a walk, a RBI, and two runs.
Brad Speek went 2-for-6 with a RBI and two runs.
The first game saw a defensive struggle between two strong pitching performances. Each team surrendered one hit through the first five innings. The two starters recorded 17 strikeouts between them, including 10 from Olliges. In the bottom of the seventh,
Nic Chafin walked and advanced to second on the balk. A single to left from Harper would be bobbled in the outfield, allowing Chafin to score for the winning run.
In opposite fashion of game one, the Golden Eagles jumped on the Tigers early in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Korie Vire singled to center field, scoring Speek from second for the first run of the game. Simpkins raced home on a
Dillon Sievert ground out for the final run. SU added three more runs in the third inning to push the margin five runs. Speek drove in Chafin to make it 3-0, Simpkins scored the next run and Speek walked home to make if 5-0. The Golden Eagles added one run in the fourth inning to stretch the SU lead to six runs when a throwing error to first allowed Chafin to score his second run of the game. Spalding added two more runs in the sixth inning.
Austin Drake doubled to left field, scoring
Matt Harper and Drake scored on a throwing error following a Simpkins single. Chafin ripped a two-run double to left field, ending the game via the ten after seven run rule.
Spalding will be back in action Sunday, April 24
th to take on Washington University in double-header action at Derby City Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 pm EDT.
