LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team rolled to a pair of wins over Eureka College, 12-2 and 25-4, Saturday afternoon at Derby City Field. With the wins, Spalding improves to 16-7 overall and 8-2 in SLIAC play, while Eureka falls to 3-13 and 1-8 in conference.
In the opener, the Golden Eagles scored seven runs in the second inning to jump out to a 7-0 lead as they cruised to a 12-2 win.
Kam Bruner led SU at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Three more Golden Eagles finished with two RBIs (Patterson, Speek, Harper).
Javier Guerra (3-0) earned the win, allowing two runs, zero earned, on six hits, while striking out nine batters and walking three.
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Eagles hung six runs in the second to take a 7-0 lead.
Matt Harper put the first pair of runs on the board ripping a double to left field bringing
Brad Speek and Dillon Sievery across the plate. Bruner also drove in a pair of runs with a single to right field scoring
Nic Chafin and
Austin Drake. SU added three more runs in the fourth inning;
Blake Patterson provided the highlight of the game when he blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Golden Eagles a 10-1 lead.
Brad Speek drove in two more runs in the fifth and Eureka got one back in the sixth to make the final score 12-2.
Spalding dominated the second game the Golden Eagles slugged their way to a 25-4 win over the Red Devils.
At the plate,
Blake Patterson was on fire going 2-for-3 with seven RBIs, including a four-RBI grand slam in the first inning.
Kyle Olliges (2-1) earned the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits, while striking out eight batters and walking two.
In game two, Eureka got on the board with a run in the first, but the Golden Eagles answered with 13 runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a
Blake Patterson grand slam homer. Spalding padded their lead scoring six more runs in the third inning. Patterson drove in two more runs with a double to left field, and
Quenton Brownlee plated two more with a double to left-center to push SU's lead to 19-1. The Golden Eagles would go on to score six more runs to make the final margin 25-
The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action Wednesday hosting Centre College at 7:00 pm EST at Derby City Field.
