LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team split games with Greenville, losing 4-2, before winning 5-3. In the first game, Adam Lamb (2-1) picked up the victory, while Jason Collingwood (2) earned the save.
Aaron Mitchell (4-3) was hit with the loss. The second game saw
Hayden Davenport (1-0) earn the win, while
Chance Brinley (2) picked up the save. Dillon Reel (0-4) was tagged with the loss.
Kam Bruner had a good day, going 2-for-5 with a walk, a run, and two RBI's.
Brad Speek went 2-for-7 with a run and a RBI.
Blake Patterson went 2-for-6 with a run and a RBI.
Greenville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The scoring was highlighted by a two-run homerun off the bat of Shane Olmsted. The Golden Eagles would answer back in the bottom of the third. With a man on third, Speek would double down the left field line, making it a 3-1 ballgame. Bruner would hit a sacrifice fly to shallow left center, allowing Speek to come across the plate to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Panthers would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make it 4-2, Greenville. In the bottom of the seventh, Spalding would move a man into scoring position, but be unable to find a rally.
In game two, Greenville jumped on the board in the first taking a 1-0 lead, but the Golden Eagles answered in the bottom of the inning when Patterson singled to right field driving in
Korie Vire. The Panthers regained the lead in the second inning when Ryan Strohm singled up the middle, scoring Max Gabriel.
Kam Bruner blasted a solo homer over the right field wall to knot the game at two runs apiece. Spalding took their first lead of the game when
Matt Harper grounded into a double play allowing
Nic Chafin to score from third. Greenville's Travis Ralls grounded out to second, scoring Kaleb Miller to tie the game, 3-3, in the top of the seventh. SU pushed their way back in front in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead.
Dillon Sievert tripled down the right field line, bringing Patterson around from first base for the first run.
Jacob Woodruff singled to center, scoring Sievert for the final run. Brinley came in in the ninth and shut it down, recording three strikeouts to earn the save.
Spalding will be back in action Saturday, April 23
rd when they welcome Iowa Wesleyan to Derby City Field. The first game is set for 1 pm EDT.
