Spalding soars past Thomas Moore, 9-5

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team defeated Thomas Moore College, 9-5. The win improved the Golden Eagles to 19-9 overall, while the loss dropped the Saints to 16-6. Javier Guerra (4-0) picked up the win, while Josh Cain (1-1) was hit for the loss.

Brad Speek led the way for Spalding, going 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs. Dillon Sievert went 2-for-4 with a walk, a RBI, and a run. Kam Bruner also went 2-for-4 with a walk, a RBI, and a run.

The Golden Eagles started out in a 2-0 hole, giving up a run in the fourth and fifth innings. SU responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Bruner drove in Spalding's first run of the game with a double to right field bringing in Nic Chafin, which advanced Korie Vire to third. Blake Patterson grounded out to second, allowing Vire to score to knot it at two runs apiece. SU took the lead when Speek singled up the middle to bring Bruner across, and Sievert singled up the middle scoring Speek to push the lead to two runs, 4-2. The Golden Eagles pushed their margin to three runs in the sixth when Vire raced home on a wild pitch to make it 5-2. Thomas More got a run back in the seventh; Zach Fardo doubled to left field and advanced home following a throwing error to first base. SU added four runs in the seventh to make the margin 9-3.The Golden Eagles juiced the bases to start the inning, Matt Harper ripped a three-run double to left field, and scored following a pair of wild pitches for the final run of the inning. The Saints took two runs back in the top of the eighth on a Donovan Pogue two-run homer to left field to make it 9-5, but the Golden Eagle pitching would hold on for the victory.

Spalding will be back in action this Friday, April15th to take on the Greenville College Panthers at Derby City Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 pm EST.
