TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Spalding University baseball team fell to Rose-Hulman Institue of Technology Wednesday night, 14-4. The win improves the Fightin' Engineers to 7-4, while the loss sees the Golden Eagles record fall to 9-7. Alec McNally (1-0) earned the win, while
Cole Slamko (0-1) was tagged for the loss.
Kam Bruner had solid outing, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's, one run, and a stolen base.
Korie Vire went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs, and a stolen base. Caleb Kissel led Rose-Hulman, going 3-for-5 with three RBI's and three runs.
Spalding opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Vire hit a single and stole second to move into scoring position. Bruner would hit a single to score Vire from second and give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, Rose-Hulman would score on a wild pitch to knot the game at 1-1. The Fightin' Engineers would use a big third inning to take a 4-1 lead off of three hits. The offense of Rose-Hulman would continue to shine in the bottom of the fourth. Five runs would come across to score, highlighted by a two RBI single from Caleb Kissel to make it a 9-1 ballgame. Spalding would work their way back into the game in the top of the sixth. Vire would single and reach second on a throwing error. Bruner would single to score Vire from second to make it 9-2. With runners on first and second,
Matt Harper would single, scoring his man from second.
Casey Gibson would step in next and hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 9-4 deficit. The Fightin' Egineeers would answer back in the bottom half of the inning when David Burnside hit a two-run homerun to extend their lead to 11-4. In the bottom of the seventh, Rose-Hulman would add two more runs to the box score, pushing their lead to 13-4. The Fightin' Engineers would add one more run in the eighth in an attempt to put the game away. Spalding would be unable to find a late rally as they were set down in order to close out the game.
Spalding will look to get back on the winning track Friday, March 25
th when they travel to Elsah, Ill. to take on Principia College in SLIAC play. The game is set to start at 8 pm EST.
