ELSAH, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team won their second straight conference game, edging out Principia College, 6-4. The win brings the Golden Eagles overall record to 10-7, with a 2-2 mark in the SLIAC. The loss drops the Panthers to 4-10 overall and a 0-1 mark in conference play.
Kyle Olliges (1-1) earned the win, while
Korie Vire (4) picked up the save. Sawyer Grow (2-2) was tagged with the loss.
Nic Chafin had a strong performance, going 2-for-5 with a homerun, tallying a RBI, two runs, and a stolen base.
Blake Patterson also had an effective outing, going 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run, including a solo homerun.
Brad Speek went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run, and a stolen base.
Spalding opened the scoring in the top of third when Chafin led off the inning with a solo homerun to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
Matt Harper reached on an error and was able to move to third on a pair of passed balls.
Kam Bruner would hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in the man from third to make it 2-0, Spalding. Principia would have an answer in the bottom half when Connor Coyne hit a RBI single to make it 2-1. Chafin would lead off the fifth for the Golden Eagles with a single that saw him reach second on an error. He would steal third to put pressure on the Panther defense. Vire would hit a sac fly to left and extend the lead to 3-1. Principia would make it 3-2 when an error on the catcher would see an unearned run come across the plate. The top of the sixth would see Spalding put some distance between them and their opponent. Patterson would lead off with a solo shot, the second homerun of the game for Spalding. Speek would follow with a double.
Jacob Woodruff would reach base after being hit by a pitch. A passed ball would put runners on second and third for
Casey Gibson. He would step in and hit a 2 RBI single to make it 6-2, Spalding. Principia would get a run back in the bottom half when a groundball would score the man from third. The Panthers would try to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Zach Greenie hit a homerun to make it 6-4, but Spalding would close the door late and keep the Panthers off the board.
Spalding will wrap up this three game series Saturday, March 26
th in double-header action against Principia College. The first game is scheduled for 1 pm EST with the second game to follow.
