Spalding fails to hold on against Texas Lutheran, falls 7-5

SEGUIN, Tex. – The Spalding University baseball team dropped their second straight game, falling to Texas Lutheran University, 7-5. With the loss, Spalding's overall record drops to 7-4. The win sees the Bulldogs improve to 12-8. The win goes to Drew Waller (1-0). Jimi Keating (1-2) was tagged with the loss. Stephen Greenlees earned the saved.
 
Korie Vire led the way for Spalding, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run. Dillon Sievert went 2-for-3 with three RBI's. Lincoln Baylor was huge for the Bulldogs, going 1-for-2 with three RBI's and a run.
 
Spalding got the scoring started in the top of the second inning. Brad Speek singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a groundout. Sievert singled down the left field line to bring the man from second in to score to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. Texas Lutheran would tie the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third after a sacrifice fly. Spalding would have an answer in the top of the fourth. With runners on second and third, Sievert hit a two RBI double down the left field line to make it a 3-1 Spalding lead. The Golden Eagles would extend their lead in the top of the fifth. Jacob Woodruff walked to start the inning. Vire doubled to put runners on second and third. Kam Bruner hit a sacrifice fly to score Woodruff. A single by Matt Harper scored Vire and Spalding led, 5-1. The bottom of the sixth would see the Bulldogs cut the Spalding lead to 5-3. Texas Lutheran took their first lead in the bottom of the seventh, erupting with four runs to go up 7-5, including a three RBI double from Baylor. In the top of the ninth, Spalding was in desperate need of a rally. With one out, they would have the bases loaded. A line drive to first base would turn into a game ending double play and the Golden Eagle rally fell short.
 
Spalding wraps up their road trip Wednesday, March 16th when they travel to Kerrville, Tex. to take on Schreiner University. The game is scheduled for a 3 pm EST start time.
