KERRVILLE, Tex. – The Spalding University baseball team shut down Schreiner University, winning 6-0. The win brings the Golden Eagles overall record to 8-4, while the loss drops the Mountaineers to 5-15 on the season.
Javier Guerra (2-0) earned the victory, while Caleb Allen (1-3) was credited with the loss.
Korie Vire led the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI's and a run.
Nic Chafin had solid performance, going 3-for-5 with a RBI, two runs, and a stolen base.
Kam Bruner stayed hot, going 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run.
Spalding opened the scoring in the top of the first to take an early lead. Chafin led off the game with a double. A groundout moved him into scoring position before Vire hit a single to drive him in for a 1-0 lead. Vire advanced to second on a passed ball and was driven home off of a Bruner single, extending the lead to 2-0. In the top of the third,
Joe Hatcher reached on an error and
Austin Drake doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. A Chafin single would score Hatcher and move Drake to third. Chafin would then steal second base to put two runners in scoring position. Vire stepped in and hit a two RBI single to give the Golden Eagles a 5-0 lead. Guerra was mowing hitters down and not allowing the Mountaineers to threaten as the game progressed. In the top of the seventh, Bruner would hit a double and be knocked in on a
Blake Patterson single to stretch the lead to 6-0. The mountaineers would be unable to generate any offense as Guerra went eight strong innings allowing only four hits.
Evan Nicoulin pitched a perfect ninth inning to end the game.
After an extended road trip in which the Golden Eagles managed a 4-2 record, Spalding will return to the friendly confines of Derby City Field Saturday, March 19
th to take on Blackburn College to open SLIAC play. This three game series opens with a double-header Saturday with the first game scheduled for 12 pm EST and second game to follow.
